The baseball, softball and multipurpose fields now have turf, five new tennis courts are done, and a new practice field between the high school and middle school is already in use. At Haymaker Park, the district added a field, scoreboard and a building with a concession stand, restrooms and press box. Everything should be finished by Christmas.

Council will hold a public hearing on the proposed 2027 budget at 7 PM Wednesday, Nov. 4 at the Municipal Building, 4100 Sardis Rd., per a legal notice on NoticeRegistry, plus a second hearing on 2026 budget changes. In August, TribLive reported the 2027 capital plan at about $5.5 million, including roughly $1.6 million for paving, $200,000 for Townsend Park and a year round restroom at Community Park. A good chance to ask questions before it's final.

Beach Flights From Latrobe? Breeze Airways Is Coming to Arnold Palmer
Westmoreland County is putting $25,000 in hotel tax money toward promoting Breeze Airways' new service at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport, TribLive reports. Twice weekly Myrtle Beach flights start in February, with Orlando planned for late May. Spring break without the drive to Pittsburgh International, anyone?

MURRYSVILLE HISTORY

The Last Toll House on the Northern Turnpike
In 1819, a company formed to carry the Northern Turnpike, a toll road linking Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, from New Alexandria through Murrysville, and crews built that stretch by 1821. Jeremiah Murry used the turnpike as his new town's Main Street, and much of it later became Old William Penn Highway.
The toll house still stands on West Pike at the Sampson/Clark Homestead. The Murrysville Historical Preservation Society says it began as a 1784 cabin and still has its original double sided chimney. It's believed to be the last toll house on the old route, and the society opens it for events through the year.
Hidden Murrysville: The Delmont Traffic Dummy
Before traffic lights, a stone pillar with a small glass light stood in the middle of Delmont's Salem Crossroads, telling drivers to keep to the right, TribLive reports. Tossed over a hillside when signals arrived, it was rescued in the mid 1990s and now stands in the Rose Wigfield Parklet on Greensburg Street, lit by a solar light at night. An easy stop with the kids.
