Murrysville Still Working on Route 22 Signal Problems

TribLive reports that Murrysville officials are still wrestling with traffic signal trouble along Route 22, where the aging signal coordination system has been failing for years. Contractors recently found a failed processor at one intersection that is covered by warranty and can be replaced, along with transformer and radio problems. Murrysville has secured a $626,000 state grant toward replacing the system at 11 intersections, though the full project is expected to cost more than $1 million.

Gearhard Farms Keeps Its Family Legacy Going After 250 Years

TribLive takes a look at Gearhard Farms in Murrysville, which was established in 1769 and is described as the oldest operating farm in Westmoreland County. Mike and Cassie Gearhard are the ninth generation to run it. The corn maze, pumpkin patch and hayrides continue until the farm closes for the season on Nov. 1.

Franklin Regional High School Ranked No. 8 in Pittsburgh Area by Niche

CBS Pittsburgh reports that the latest Niche rankings place Franklin Regional Senior High School 8th among public high schools in the Pittsburgh area. Quaker Valley is listed 7th and Pine-Richland 9th on the same list. Niche is an outside ranking site, so the ranking is Niche's own and not a state or district measure.

Italy Road Rebuild Raises Gas Line Questions in Export

TribLive reports that Export is rebuilding Italy Road through PennDOT's Turnback program, where PennDOT handles the rebuild and the borough takes over future maintenance. Borough officials are asking Peoples Natural Gas to replace an aging, corroded gas line under the road before the project is finished. Peoples says it responded to two reported leaks in 2026 and that the line is not on its current replacement list.

MURRYSVILLE HISTORY

Pennsylvania Natural Gas Men's Association historical marker for the Haymaker Well in Murrysville

The Haymaker Gas Well, 1878

On Nov. 3, 1878, a well drilled by the Haymaker brothers near what is now Murrysville blew in, bringing up natural gas instead of the oil they were after. The well was about 1,400 feet deep, and it caught fire and burned for about 18 months. The glow could be seen from far away. The gas was piped into Pittsburgh in 1884, and the old derrick still appears on Murrysville's welcome sign.
