FR Boys Soccer Is Back in the WPIAL Final, This Time vs. Plum
Franklin Regional came from behind to beat defending champion West Allegheny 3-2 on a rainy Monday night at Thomas Jefferson, TribLive reports, sending the Panthers to the WPIAL 3A final for a third straight year. FR, the No. 2 seed at 17-1-2, lost the last two finals and now meets neighbor and No. 1 seed Plum (19-0-1).
The only blemish on Plum's record is a 1-1 draw at Franklin Regional in September. The title game is Thursday, Nov. 5 at 8 PM at F.N.B. Stadium in Pittsburgh, so pack the rain gear and the navy and gold.

Murrysville's Farm Road Stream Buffer Gets a Statewide Spotlight
Environmental group PennFuture has released a model ordinance that towns can adopt to require planted buffers along streams as warehouses and data centers cover more Pennsylvania land, TribLive reports. Murrysville is held up as an example: its buffer at Community Park on Farm Road protects the headwaters of Steele's Run, a high quality stream.
Town officials told the paper the project did double duty, making the area nicer for recreation while earning credits toward state sediment goals and helping with flooding. Murrysville generally looks for 30 to 50 feet of buffer on each side of a stream.

FR Middle School Salutes Veterans Tonight and Thursday
Franklin Regional Middle School's 8th grade performing arts students will host their annual Veterans Day show at the school, 4660 Old William Penn Hwy., according to the middle school's news feed. The evening show is tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 7 PM, with daytime shows Thursday at 9 AM, 10:45 AM and 1:45 PM.
Veterans who attend the 10:45 AM show are invited to stay for lunch. To let the school know you are coming, call 724-327-5456, ext. 2003. It is a lovely one to bring a grandparent or neighbor who served.

The Old White Valley Church in Export
Long before Export was a borough, Scots-Irish settlers John and Anna McIlduff gave land for a place to worship, TribLive reported. Services started in a tent. By 1831, Lutheran and Reformed congregations shared a log church on the site, and banker Thomas Mellon is said to have attended as a young man.
The Reformed congregation built a brick church in 1856 that became today's Emmanuel Reformed UCC on Hills Church Road. In 1884 Emmanuel Lutheran moved into the white clapboard church on Roosevelt Avenue. From the 1970s to 1995 it housed the first Murrysville Christian Concern thrift shop, paid for in part by burial fees from a pet cemetery on the grounds. Export took ownership in 2001, and it is now home to the Export Historical Society. Look closely in the churchyard: about two of every three stones carry the Duff name.
Hidden Murrysville: The Staymates Log Cabin
At 4515 Round Top Road stands a two story log house built around 1785 to 1790, about 30 yards south of old Forbes Road, TribLive reported. Locals long called it a blockhouse, and an addition went on before 1830. Its last resident, Miss Bessie Staymates, was a local teacher, and the municipality bought it in 1977. You can admire it from outside anytime, and the historical society opens it for Christmas at the Cabin on Sunday, Nov. 22, from 1 to 4 PM.
